b. Developing My Career

Developing your career consist of doing a market research and identifying potential company. You can perform market research, where you can gain some insight of the company and you can explore your professional interest. Furthermore, meet the career coach for more useful details and helpful advice for your career planning.

In addition, you can gain more experience by joining student organization and be an active member in club or any student association in the university. By doing so, it can act as a stepping-stone in developing your career. You also can do some research on how to build your resume.

Begin your professional portfolio by joining the professional association. During this phase, you can start writing your resume and learn how and where to find the opportunities such as by exploring linked in and learn how to build networking in the linked in.  Actively joining a career talk and How-To Workshop could also help you in strengthen your career planning.

Most universities have a work study scheme that allows students to work part-time while attending classes. Moreover, Employers appreciate students who can handle their academic and job duties because it reflects strong time management skills and a commitment to work.

Part-time employees usually work less than 38 hours a week, have consistent and flexible working hours, and are entitled to paid time off such as sick or annual leave whereas casual work entitled to a higher wage than full-time or part-time worker. This is referred to as a ‘casual loading’ because they do not get compensation including sick or regular leave.

MAJLIS PERWAKILAN PELAJAR

The Student Representative Council’s aim is to assist the university in identifying student needs and welfare. Aside from that, the Student Representative Council helped to liven up the Institute’s environment by organizing various agendas and programs for students.

PERSATUAN ANAK – ANAK FELDA (PERSADA)

PERSADA is an aspiration or idea from YAB. Dato Seri Mohd. Najib Tun Hj. Abdul Razak, former Prime minister of Malaysia. It is one of government efforts to produce a FELDA community consisting of students in IPTA/IPTS to create a FELDA community that focuses on entrepreneurship, skills, education, sports, culture, society, combating social ills and volunteerism.

PERSADA were divided into 5 zone in Malaysia such as IPTA / IPTAS in North, Middle, South, East Coast and East of Malaysia.

ANGKATAN MAHASISWA MEMERANGI RASUAH

The government and Ministry of higher education has established Angkatan Mahasiswa Memerangi Rasuah (AMAR) in 20 universities in Malaysia. The purpose is to embed values in student to hate and avoid from performing corruption and bribery

Employability skills are essential to recruiters as it act as an importance element in every job. Candidates who already has an employability skill are consider as attractive to prospective employer. Employability skills can be divided into 10 skills:

a. Good communication

Good communication involves expressing your ideas confidently and clearly either in the form of writing or verbally. Communication skills consist of:

  • Listen

  • Confidence
  • Nonverbal communication
  • Responsiveness

b. Problem solving

Working environment consist of challenges that require a good solution. Overcoming challenges require employee to be creative and logical in finding and providing the best solutions. Problem solving involves:

  • Putting together backup plans
  • Evaluating procedures
  • Developing and transforming ideas into action

c. Teamwork

Teamwork is one of the most important employable skills where you need to work together in a team to achieve a common goal and able to respect and accept other people opinions. You need to possess emotional intelligence when working in a team to avoid any conflicts. To develop this skill, you can involve in group assignments, club, or any student society.

d. Adaptability

Employer looks for someone who is willing to learn. You need to be open-minded in accepting mistakes and learn something where you can produce even a better result from your mistakes. For example, instead of insisting to do certain work in your own way, you need to accept other people way as well.

e. Time Management

Time management involve planning your time efficiently. Good time management lead to a balance work life where you can clearly separate and put boundary between working and personal life issues. Planning consists of setting schedules, milestones, resource planning and established a project time frame.

f. Organization

Organizational skills include prioritizing, self-motivated, manage people and task and delegating resources effectively. This skill can be obtained when you organize any social activities or delegating task for others. Organizational skills should be aligned with the time-management skills.

g. Personality traits

A good character trait could make you shine and more employable than others which would make you a perfect cultural fit. The traits include professionalism, enthusiasm, positive attitudes, creativity, and confidence.

h. Commercial Awareness

Working in a particular organization require you to understand the business or industry that you applied. Aware of the company’s mission, vision or business process can attract employer to choose and invest in you as their employee because they recognize the passion that you had for their company.

i. Negotiate and Persuade

Discussing and reaching an agreement require you to possess employability skills that can convince and influence people in agreeing and accepting certain solution or decision.
